Te Uranga
It is an awesome opportunity to be across the many kaupapa impacting our University and to offer a voice on behalf of our tauira. In addition to being a WSU Director, I am the representative on Te Kāhuinga Tumuaki alongside, and chaired by, our wonderful VP Māori. This is a forum for representatives of all the roopū Māori across the University to meet and collaborate ideas.
I am in my fifth year of a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) degree. I am really passionate about my degree and Māori success in the legal sector. After I graduate I hope to be admitted to the bar and commence a long and fruitful career advocating for Te Iwi Māori, Te Tiriti o Waitangi and tikanga Māori. Alongside my law degree, I also study Te Reo Māori as a second major. Outside of my uni mahi, I enjoy hanging out with my whānau and friends. I have a one year old puppy, Peanut, who I spend a lot of time with! I also like to stay active when I can and in the past have played netball for the University of Waikato netball club.
This year I hope to continuously provide meaningful contributions and whakaaro to our Board. I also hope to support our tauira Māori as much as I can in this role. To achieve these things, I believe it’s about doing the simple things well – showing up, communicating and fostering good relationships. I think we have a really good team and so I am really excited to see where the year takes us!
Waikato Political Science Students Association
Kirikiriroa Kōrero – 4pm, 28th of July in S.1.04
In April 2021, the government outlined their new vision for healthcare in Aotearoa New Zealand. These reforms would do away with the separate District Health Boards which have shaped healthcare for the last two decades into one distinct Crown entity as well as establishing a new Māori Health Authority.
Later this month, on the 28th of July in S.1.04 WPSSA will welcome the Associate Minister of Health (Māori Health) the Honourable Peeni Henare to campus at our inaugural ‘Kirikiriroa Kōrero’ panel to have a productive and informative, policy-led discussion on these significant reforms. After introductory remarks, the Associate Minister and panelists will take questions from the audience regarding these significant reforms. This event is for all students and staff and we hope to see many of you there.
