We want you... to write for us in 2023.

Sure Boy Band

Nexus: Hard hitting question to start, how are you all?

We’re alright! A little battered and bruised after the summer season as it’s been a busy one both as a band and in our personal lives, but hey, it’s character building! We’re all feeling pretty stoked having just played Rhythm and Vines and we’re looking forward to another huge year in Sure Boy world.

Nexus: With songs Lemon Lady, you’ve started creating a unique blend of traditional rock vocals and almost spoken word, do you derive your sound from anywhere specific?

We haven’t derived our sound from anywhere intentionally. All of us individually have different music tastes so we all bring our own influences to the table to keep it exciting. We also have a lot of influences as a collective like The Beths, Stella Donnelly, Julia Jacklin, Ladyhawke, and many other amazing ladies in the music industry at the moment. We definitely take inspiration from other artists and our environment but we are actively pursuing a unique sound. As for the spoken word – we didn’t even consider that! We just love having insane amounts of run-on sentences in our lyrics and keeping things vocally interesting.

Nexus: As self-proclaimed Mum-Rock, how would you explain that sound without using music terminology?

It started as a play on the term dad-rock, but we’d describe mum-rock simply as music for mums. If you haven’t shown your mum Sure Boy, you should probably get onto that.

Nexus: Her, being your second single, is so different tonally to Lemon Lady, where are you heading in aesthetic style? Or will you keep us on our toes, wanting more?

Yeah for sure. Our next releases will tonally align more with the sound of ‘Her’, as they are all part of the same body of work. As a collective we have started to head in a heavier direction sound-wise, especially with our live sound. No doubt things will continue to develop and change as we slowly define what the ‘Sure Boy sound’ is but for now we’re trying to keep it gritty and exciting.

Nexus: Standard question, other than yourselves, are there any other local artists that you’re frothing and we should as well?

Totally! If you haven’t already treated yourself, we’re huge fans of:

  • Sofia Machray
  • Milk Tooth
  • Wiri Donna
  • DARTZ
  • Tahini Bikini.

Nexus: What’s on the horizon for Sure Boy, what should we be on the lookout for?

It’s been a hectic few years gigging around Pōneke and the North Island so we’re taking the next few months to focus on writing new music, getting our debut EP finished (yahoo!) and scheming up the most epic live show that we can possibly put on. Our first show back is playing Cuba Dupa in March. After that keep your eyes, ears and all the rest open for what may be a Sure Tour.
