Food prices Dropped… or Did They?

Over the last few months, food prices in Aotearoa have risen by approximately 50%. The situation has improved after Stats NZ released updated data for the last 6 months, from January to June. According to the report, in the 12 months to June 2024, prices for fruit and vegetables, and meat, poultry, and fish fell by 16.1% and 1.4%, respectively. New Zealanders are now able to eat healthier food that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg… or does it?

Most Kiwis experience paying a grocery bill of $200 per week. One user claimed, “The food prices have increased over 50% in the last 2 months, but a 0.3% drop isn’t going to help anyone.” Another said, “Saving 30 cents on a $100 bill—are we supposed to be excited about that?” The truth is, the cost of living in New Zealand has been out of hand for a long time, with many people having to depend on canned goods, fast food, or even considering leaving the country. The 0.3% decrease compared to the increases over the last 12 months is still unaffordable for Kiwi households.

Here are some additional stats that have been increasing over the last 12 months (Stats NZ):

  • Restaurant meals and ready-to-eat food – increased by 4.0 percent
  • Grocery food – increased by 2.3 percent
  • Non-alcoholic beverages – increased by 4.3 percent
Who TF did I marry?

Brooke Schofield was recently involved in drama with her ex-boyfriend of three months, who accused her of yapping about their relationship. Ms. Schofield took matters into her own hands, explaining her side in detail and exposing Clinton Kane in 16 consecutive videos, referencing the “Who TF Did I Marry” series from @reesamteesa on TikTok. With rising suspicions from the media, Clinton Kane published 27 videos defending himself, ending with, “I apologise for taking a weak way out of a toxic relationship by cheating.” Without addressing the allegations about faking his mother’s death, many media users are now digging into his past to verify the situation.

Writer’s note: At a time when the media is having trouble hyper-fixating on long-form content until recent TikTok dramas like “Who TF Did I Marry,” we see that similar instances such as Maddie Argy and Central Cee confirming breakup rumours and Chris Olsen discussing his abusive past relationship are trending. It seems a new form of media—short-duration series—is emerging to address young generations’ attention span issues.
