The Dishwasher, is a book about a Dishwasher. Or more specifically, Stephane the Dishwasher – an Arts Student living in Montreal, battling a gambling addiction, struggling to maintain friendships and relationships, who takes on a job as a Dishwasher to try and stay afloat.

This is one of the best books I’ve read this year. It was originally written in French, although it’s well enough translated that you can’t tell. The Dishwasher is a wonderful story of a student finding his way in the world. The characters are real and relatable, as are the problems he faces, and the way he responds to them. From the minute he steps through the back door and into the kitchen at La Trattoria, I was hooked.
