Nexus is giving Temepara a weekly column so he can talk to you about the WSU, or whatever else he wants. We know, we are a little scared too but we are embracing trust this year.

Ko Temepara Smith tōku ingoa, he uri ahau ki Ngāi Tūhoe. Ko au te Tumuaki o WSU i tēnei tau. My name is Temepara, I am the descendant of the tribe Ngāi Tūhoe, and I am President of the Waikato Students’ Union. And I would like to warmly Welcome you all, to the University of Waikato.

I acknowledge each of you, along with the dedication, challenges, and life journeys that have shaped your path to this moment. You have made the decision to come here to Waikato University, this is a very important decision. Waikato is a place of growth. This institution is not only here to get you a degree, but also about transformation, self-discovery, and shaping your understanding of the world.

Define what success means to you. Maybe it’s stepping into leadership, maybe it’s pushing yourself academically, or simply becoming more confident in who you are. Whatever it is, commit to making the most of this opportunity, because every decision and action, large or small, can have profound impacts, on not only your university experience but, life to come.

I challenge all of you to step out of your comfort zone, be bold, say yes to opportunities, and get involved. “The person sitting next to you, or a few rows down, could become a lifelong friend, a future business partner, or someone who completely changes the course of your journey. So, I implore you, join a club, attend events, and introduce yourself to someone new these small actions can open doors you never imagined. I am eager to see what fresh perspectives and energy all of you will bring to the University of Waikato.

Just know, that throughout all of your time here, there is plenty of support across campus, and we, as the Student Union, have got your back. We are your tuakana, your older brothers and sisters on campus here to help look out for you. but I will keep it brief about us, as you will get to know us better this week.
