It’s B Trimester and I Am Sad – Issue 15
- Nexus Mag
- August 3, 2020
I started making this playlist intending to have some slow, inoffensive background music to study to and I actually just made myself fucking depressed. Enjoy.
White Ferrari – Frank Ocean
What can I say? Frank Ocean is the king of sad boi hours and the master of the cry to/fuck to genre. I don’t know about you but I struggle studying to anything with poppy, repetitive lyrics and this one is perfect because the lyrics make absolutely no sense until you go at them with your English degree.
Funeral – Phoebe Bridgers
I truly don’t know what I was thinking when I put a song literally about a funeral on a study playlist. If you’re not already uncontrollably sobbing in the stacks at the library when Phoebe gets to the line ‘Jesus Christ I’m so blue all the time’ you probably don’t have a soul.
Circles – Mac Miller
An ode to feeling directionless, this song is simultaneously calming and unsettling, especially if you’ve been staring at a blank word doc for the last hour. Let the dreamy production and Mac’s soulful words be your figurative thunder blanket <3
Jesus Christ 2005 God Bless America – The 1975
Willing to bet the song title is just as chaotic as your sleeping pattern at the moment.
Freakin’ Out On The Interstate – Briston Maroney
Change the lyrics to ‘freakin’ out on Wairere Drive’ and you have an accurate depiction of the commute to uni every morning.
Asleep – The Smiths
This one is for the people who think liking Pulp Fiction is a personality trait. Any sad indie playlist has to have a requisite The Smiths song to build indie credibility. I don’t make the rules, I just follow them and then proclaim to be anti-establishment.
Transatlanticism – Death Cab For Cutie
This was my most played song of 2011 which is living proof that it doesn’t get better. The instrumentation really builds, much like your anxiety when presented with your workload for the next 3 months.
No One’s Gonna Love You – Band of Horses
You’ve probably heard this song in several TV shows and movies. It’s always in that sad panning shot just after someone’s been dumped. Great to listen to while you watch raindrops race in the car and reflect on how you’re the main character.
Truce – Twenty One Pilots
My flatmate had this album on vinyl and scratched it. The needle would get stuck on the line ‘stay alive’ and just repeat it over and over until we moved it. One time it got stuck repeating ‘you will die’ and I think about that moment a lot.
Flightless Bird, American Mouth – Iron & Wine
Yeah, this is from the Twilight Soundtrack and I stand by it. Absolutely bangs and if you’re studying to it you can escape to a place in your mind where you’re slow dancing at prom with a questionably sexy, unquestionably rich vampire in 2008.
This Is Me Trying – Taylor Swift
‘So I got wasted like all my potential’ is the most relatable lyric of all of 2020 and if I didn’t tell you it was TSwiz you wouldn’t be currently rolling your eyes. Facts.
