My year across the ditch has made me aware of the slightly concerning stereotypes people have about us Kiwis! It’s also made me appreciate the things we just get right. So, here are my top ten things I don’t particularly love about being a Kiwi overseas (particularly in Aus land)!
1. “Do a Haka!”
Unfortunately, I haven’t attempted this since I was in year six Kapa Haka so I don’t think I’d do it justice babes x
2. “Are you a Sheep Shagger?”
Very concerning stereotype. I like to hope it’s not based on true events, but no sweetie, I can’t say I’ve ever even considered committing that act.
3. Seriousness
I would love a bit of the ‘yeah nah yeah’ attitude because it’s never really that deep, is it?
4.“Are you from QUEENSTOWN?”
I love the energy, but embarrassingly enough I’ve never even been to the South Island. It blew my mind that half the people I meet think Queenstown is the Mecca of NZ as that’s where they go on holiday!
5.“pAvLoVa Is Australian”
YOU CAN HAVE IT. I’m sorry but who actually likes it? I have never once eaten pavlova for a reason other than not wanting to be rude. For the sake of my reputation, I really hope we collectively agree on this one!
6. Bunnings does not do sausage sizzles
Do you know how excited I was to see Bunnings everywhere over here only to be met with the harsh reality that they don’t serve my death row meal every Sunday? Sausage sizzles in general are scarce, awfully sad!
7. People not being someone’s Cousins-friends-boyfriends-dog
Meeting people that somehow aren’t connected to you feels so odd. Like are you even real, we don’t even have a mutual Facebook friend?!
8. The pretty cash
I feel as though this is not talked about enough but NZ cash is elite! I may be more motivated to earn some dough if it was as pretty as ours!
9. BAKERIES
Sometimes (every day), I just want strawberry milk and a mince and cheese pie. It’s the simple things.
10. “Have you ever seen a Hobbit?”
I genuinely almost spat out my drink when I got asked this. The guy who asked GENUINELY thought the Hobbits are real people who live in a real Hobbit town here. Don’t worry, of course I told him he was in fact correct and my cousin is actually one!red
