Don’t get me wrong, I’m an avid horror fan and you can always find me curled up at night with any terrifying movie I can find, but have we as a society been a little overexposed to the genre? It’s easy to forget what we’re exposed to on a daily basis when it’s considered ‘normal’, but considering the expansion and progression of filmmaking in recent decades, there’s some gory shit out there that’s easy to watch. I mean, just the other day I was watching movies, happily eating snacks while giggling over some pretty realistic horror gore of someone getting their head torn off that would probably concern a lot of other people.

So, have horror movies gone too far and have we accepted them so easily into our lives that we’ve become desensitized? Introducing violent content into the minds of young people has already been proven to have some effect through a study on video games, so I don’t imagine movies to be much different in the same genre. Violence and aggression have become more accepted through recent generations, which in light of the real world, probably won’t end very well. I’m not saying there should be anything against horror movies and the whole genre – hello, dork horror fan here – but there could be a little more around managing its presentations to younger minds. Don’t go taking it away though (for all you horror directors who are totally reading this) because horror is amazing.

Or who knows, maybe I’m just too embedded in the horror culture that I’ve gone a little insane. Because come on. Ghostface, Pennywise, Krueger: smash.
