The Apathy Epidemic (And Why You Should Give a Shit)
No one gives a fuck. Why does no one give a fuck? There’s so much to give a fuck about!
We’re all too occupied with faster, cheaper, richer, easier. There’s a reason why the nonchalant boyfriend trope has been the butt of the joke recently. It’s embarrassing. We’ve been made to believe that sincerity is dangerous, that it puts you at risk for social criticism. We cling to irony because of the plausible deniability. “Guys, I’m just being sarcastic” “I’m just a girl” “Satire, I promise.”. But frankly, irony is a shit alibi.
Western culture expects us to balance making sincere effort and achieving the desired outcome whilst maintaining an appearance of apathy. When I learned that some cultures have little to no concept of being a ‘try-hard’ I was truly in shock. How freeing must that be? To be passionate and effortful and not have to worry about being judged for trying too hard. Imagine if we actually encouraged people to be passionate instead of tearing people down the moment the poppy gets a little too tall?
We’re terrified of being passionate. Does someone else having a bit of fun actually hurt you? Why do you feel attacked by someone lip synching to a clip from their favorite TV show? Great news, you don’t have to watch it. Better yet, you don’t need to do anything about it!
Before I get off my soapbox, I want to encourage you to find what you give a fuck about. And if you already know, that’s amazing, now do it more. I guarantee you; you live twice as much when you let passion guide you rather than cowering beneath attempting to seem unbothered.
