Record-Breaking Champions of England?

At the time you’re reading this, the 2023/24 Premier League season will be over, and the team going home with the title will either be Manchester City, or Arsenal. While we can’t predict the future, we can lay down the facts so that whatever victory has come may be a little more sweet (and in turn, the defeat a little more bitter).

If Manchester City has come out on top, they will be the first Premier League club to win four consecutive league titles. After winning the treble during the 2022/23 season, it comes as no surprise that Pep’s team is still dominating English football. Additionally, despite being knocked out of the Champions League by Real Madrid, City may go on to win the double this season; this Sunday at 2 AM (NZT), they will play Manchester United in the FA Cup final.

If Arsenal has won the title, it will mark the first time since the 2003/04 season that they’ve walked away with the league’s trophy. That season, football legend Thierry Henry won the Golden Boot and Player of the Season with 30 goals for the Gunners. This season however, while they are not leading the stats in top goal scorer, Arsenal has the most clean sheets in the league (18) as of Matchweek 37.

While Arsenal has had a most impressive season, it is most likely that ‘Manchester City’ was engraved into the Premier League trophy Monday morning. After their 2-0 away win against Spurs (diminishing all Champions League hope for Tottenham), City sat at a comfortable 88 points with Arsenal just behind at 86. With these results, it looks like something of a repeat of last season where we saw Arsenal finishing second with 84 points, only 5 behind the treble-winning side.

Speaking of last season, it comes as no shock that Erling Haaland is set to win the Golden Boot once again with 27 goals as of last week (although we’re sure he’s cemented his win against West Ham Monday morning). The Norwegian striker scored 52 goals in 53 games across all competitions last season, with 36 being scored in the Premier League, cementing a new Premier League single season record.

Here at Nexus, we’re going to miss writing Premier League updates (until next season starts of course). But hey, at least we still have the Euros!
