On the 21st of July, the government announced $82 million dollars’ worth of funding to create a new medical school at Waikato Uni. The medical school had been in talks for several years and when it was not announced as a part of the budget earlier in the year it seemed unlikely to get the go-ahead, but nonetheless it has been approved. With the $82 million from the government and $150 million from the University, the school is estimated to cost $230 million. To students who have already completed a three-year undergraduate degree, the school will offer a four-year graduate program, giving space for an extra 120 medical students each year in the nation. While many are happy, the government has admitted that it would have been cheaper to increase funding for pre-existing medical schools, causing some opposition by the Labour party and a demand for the business case to be released.
