The Salvation Army has released a report which has revealed that one in 1000 New Zealander’s are currently without any form of shelter. Other information included in the data has found that 14 in 1000 are living in what is considered uninhabitable housing and currently 57,000 women across the motu are homeless. No part of the country has seen any decline in these rates, while every area has had an increase. Unsurprisingly, housing has moved to the second largest concern of those aged between 18-34. Crimes against homeless people have also reportedly risen by 81 percent. Tamantha Paul, Green’s spokesperson for housing has also stated that the rate at which emergency housing was removed is a cause. Interestingly, the 2023 census found that 111,666 dwellings were currently empty, possibly indicating the problem is partially controlled by a certain class.
