Maybe you’ve noticed some fancy new buildings along Knighton Road. Maybe, if you’re one of our readers who lived in Studvill last year, you got to have study sessions soundtracked by machinery, hammers, and worksite JBL speakers. These are the University’s new apartments. Billed as accommodation for students who want some extra independence (translation: not having to smuggle your sneaky link around) while still living on campus. These things weren’t exactly cheap to put together (trust me, insider knowledge) so are the Uni wringing out students to make their money back, or are they a pretty solid deal? Well, I don’t know, but I reached out to TJ Cloete to see if he did… Given he’s the associate director of student accommodation and all that.
How come we’ve got these new, nice apartments?
TJ: The new development is part of our long‑term strategy to expand our student accommodation, offering to meet current demand and plan for future growth. The Knighton Road apartments allow us to offer 75 more students high‑quality living spaces, conveniently on campus. They also support the University’s broader goal of enhancing student experience and wellbeing.
What’s the pricing like?
TJ: The apartments offer two types of rooms – standard and premium. A premium room has an ensuite. Pricing for 2026 on a 37-week contract is $332 per week for a standard room, and $360 for a premium room.
Can other student accommodations expect upgrades in the future?
TJ: Several projects are in planning, with future work focused on improving sustainability, accessibility, and overall student experience. While not every residence will see immediate redevelopment, ongoing investment is part of our strategy.
