At the start of July, the Ministry for Science and Technology in New Zealand unveiled the government’s new AI future pathways strategy—a framework that was created with the help of AI. The framework, which is intended to outline a plan for safe use of AI in the public sector, has been welcomed by businesses, but many have also voiced concerns over its ethical implications. Dr Andrew Lensen from the University of Victoria has stated that while the framework it would increase growth in the economy, it was “worryingly light” in terms of ethics. There has also been many objections to the use of AI in order to develop the strategy in the first place. Newsroom has summarised the key steps in the framework as: “clarify your AI purpose, prepare for adoption, build internal capability, establish governance frameworks, and ensure quality data and ethical use”.
