When you’ve been in Hamilton long enough you realise this place kinda sucks, we don’t have aesthetic historical buildings and multiple libraries like dunedin, we don’t have a supermodern student bar and restaurant like Christchurch, we don’t have a rooftop soccer pitch and multiple dinner spots on campus like auckland, I dont know what those country Bumpkins do at massey and lincoln but we’re probably better than them. Anyway, here are some “Spots” on Waikato campus that are kinda neat.
- G basement: Potentially the greatest academic spot on campus, it is a not well known computer lab in the basement of G block. you can get to it from the access door around the back of the G building taking a left then a right. It has no windows, usually no people, 24 hour access, and it’s always warm as hell. This place is good because there are no distractions when you actually have to get shit done.
- TC 6th floor balcony: I’m generous for giving this one away for free. This one is best after hours (when no staff are there) . It’s a cool spot to have a date, take your dinner or spectate whatever is happening on the uni field (Zuru nightglow). Take your student id and try to access a bunch of the doors around TC block and buildings in that area. Some of the doors let you in, some don’t. If you get inside, all of the buildings are connected and you can get into the main tall building. Go to the 6th floor the one before the top and there is a lounge with a sick ass balcony – Enjoy
- Law Building teachers lounge: This one’s pretty neat but I am unsure if you can still get here with the MSB after hours access changes, again after hours you have to go through MSB then through the tunnel area to get into the blade runner looking building. Once you’re in there go to the top floor at the end and there’s a teachers lounge you can make coffee in. It’s cool cause you get to be in this dystopian geometrical room with big glass windows looking down on the slums of ham east, and you can make coffee. I wouldn’t go to this one in the day and if anyone sees you there at night which more often than not theres someone working late they’ll probably tell you to fuck off.
- Flash Engineering Lounge: This one is located through a door out the back of an office in D block in a proper locked off area, I haven’t been here myself but I’ve heard its ridiculously flash, Leather couches, beer fridges, the whole lot. This one’s more of a myth than an actual spot you can go to so good luck trying to find it.
Honorable off campus mentions:
- Hamilton gardens – worth checking out if you haven’t been
- Top story of centre place carpark – go rev your shitbox there or something idk
- The riverside – go through MADE in Claudelands, get a coffee walk to the back and there’s a nice path with parks and reserves running along the river.
- Hakiramata summit – steep walk to a view of hamilton and huntly (shit and shitter) good walk tho
- Jacks cafe – good cafe at the end of knighton road
Tips
Your student ID will let you in more places than you would think after hours. You just need to try the right doors and more often than not there’s multiple doors to get into a building. If anyone tells you that you can’t be there just say you pay your student fees. Go find a spot, do something at your spot.
