April Harper Grey is an artpop/hyperpop artist known as Underscores. She frequently collaborates with other experimental pop adjacent artists such as Jane Remover and Danny Brown, whilst having her own unique genre-bending sound that separates her from the rest.
Underscores’ latest album U is fully self-produced and feels like her most personal and all-encompassing album yet, while also feeling like a love letter to the artists in her circle and those she is influenced by.
Besides the three singles (“Do It”, “Tell Me U Want It”, and “Music”), three other new tracks stand out for me amongst the rest. Firstly, “The Peace” is the 4th track on the album and makes heavy use of a vocoder over a more traditional hyperpop synth or drum. “Lovefield” is my second pick and is one half Oklou-coded, the other half classic glitchy and unpredictable Underscores production. The final track, and my third pick, is “Wish U Well.” This is classic Underscores, with a more traditional hyperpop beat accompanied by moments of midwest emo-coded guitar.
