This novel, written back in the modernist era, is one of those gems that says a whole lot more about society than you’d ever think possible. It dives into the startling reality of coloured women who are white presenting, which isn’t a topic we see much of in literature, especially with how blunt it works with the race of different characters. I mean, one of them calls his wife ‘Nig’ as a so called cute little nickname.
Even though it deals with confronting topics and leaves you feeling pretty unsettled by the time you’re done, it’s truly an important book to read in its genre. There’s a few too many things going on at the same time, but I think it makes it even better.
But as someone who needs to know how things truly finish, the ending of this book really irritated me. Which was the point. I’m just complaining.
