Making food with no money – Casserole

This is a very cheap and easy meal that is great for the winter months and is bound to accelerate the seasonal depression. This meal isn’t that tasty, looks pretty shit but can be cooked while you’re not at home and costs fuck all.

Ingredients

  •  Red onion
  • Tinned tomatoes
  • Bean or lentil mix
  • Carrot
  • Stock cube
  • Any source of meat
  • Mushrooms
  • Anything else you like

Method

Go to the supermarket and get one of those brown paper bags. Fill it to the absolute brim with your favourite vegetables. Go through the self checkout and weigh it, scan it all as brown onions or whatever vegetable is currently cheapest. Chop everything up and chuck it in a crock pot, add tinned tomatoes, some source of meat, add a stock cube to a cup of boiling water – if you don’t have any source of stock just use some water and spices. Put your crockpot on high, give it a stir and leave it for like 6 hours. If you leave it long enough, anything you put in there will become edible.

Pro tips:

  • I once made this with a mystery meat leg a flatmate who had moved out had left in our freezer. Thinking back there is a high chance it was goat meat. It made me very sick and was not enjoyable whatsoever. Identify your meat before use.
  • Have it on rice or a cheap source of carbs to make it go further
  • Steal from your local supermarket

Playlist

If you actually end up making this meal then your flat is probably closer to a halfway house than it is student accommodation. Play some grunge, Alice in Chains or some Stone Temple Pilots to complete the cynical nihilist meal aesthetic
