It never ceases to amaze me how this travesty of Donna Tart’s The Secret History ever managed to become so popular.
If We Were Villains tells the story of a group of Shakespearean drama students as they try to cover up the death of friend. However, the fact that the students study Shakespeare is where the originality in this book ends. The storyline is almost identical to The Secret History, minus the good storytelling and interesting characters.
The book is basically about a group of mates who randomly let a friend die because he, for some unexplained reason, decided to switch personalities overnight and become a dickhead. Not only did he not warrant dying in my opinion, by the characters in this book are unbelievably shallow. Overall, I did not enjoy this book one bit and reading it felt like a chore.
