The Animal Kingdom ruled 2026
2026 has seen humanity’s complex web of governments and economics crushing the common man’s spirit, the shadows casted by those who weave it growing ever darker and heavier. But our greatest allies came to our aid, pulling at the cracks to shine rays of hope and joy in miserable times – those allies being adorable, fluffy animals. Bolivia found a brand-new wild cat species this year, the spotted Tilcayo, who’s smaller than most housecats but will still manage to take up half the bed at night. Chonky animals also reigned supreme, the Karure winning the 2026 Bird of the Year competition and Fat Bear Week won by the gentle giant known as Backpack. New Zealand’s second-favourite fat bird learnt to differentiate between the back of zoologists’ heads and one another, and Kākāpō’s numbers reach a new high of 325. But the animals that truly won our hearts – The baby Japanese Macaque known as Punch Monkey, and whatever the fuck Jimothy is.
