Love, Lies, and a Concerning Amount of Lab Safety Violations

Rating: -1/5

The Love Hypothesis is the cinematic equivalent of eating an entire packet of biscuits in one sitting: deeply enjoyable, slightly embarrassing, and best not examined too closely. The film follows PhD student Olive Smith as she enters a fake relationship with intimidatingly tall and emotionally constipated professor Adam Carlsen. Naturally, the fake relationship becomes real, because apparently nobody has ever heard of simply communicating. The film’s greatest strength is its understanding of academic insecurity. Olive’s anxiety about belonging in science gives the romance some genuine emotional weight, particularly as she navigates sexism, competition and the pressure to prove herself. However, the film’s portrayal of academia can feel suspiciously convenient, with professional boundaries repeatedly sacrificed for romantic tension. Adam’s behaviour is also often framed as attractive when, in reality, a reasonable person might recommend several HR meetings.
