The Gentleman – Season 2

Rating: 4/5

After rewatching the five-star masterpiece that was The Gentlemen’s first season, I leapt into season two with excitement; Theo James was back as the Duke of Halstead (and arguably more attractive than ever before) with his his work-wife Susie Glass (who has given me a new celebrity crush; Kaya Scodelario) with one goal in mind; expand their British weed empire into Europe, and reclaim the ancient lands of the Halstead family.

After their success in the first season, I was honestly expecting this one to be a bit predictable; the new Duke of Halstead has mastered the world of drugs, and will now expand his empire effortlessly and resolve all conflicts with ease. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the writers decided to go another way, and instead put him through a world of pain and suffering instead. I won’t spoil anything, but watching His Lordship flounder through the worlds of politics and narcotics was incredibly entertaining, and felt like the realistic progression of the story.

The acting, plot structure and film quality remained top tier, with my only complaints being that there weren’t enough episodes, so the last episode felt rushed. I think they were trying to recreate the magic of the first season to have that “dominoes fall into place” feeling, but with too many dormant and underdeveloped plotlines, it felt rushed instead of satisfying. Overall, it was an amazing continuation of the show, and I can’t wait for season three… in two year’s time.
