Opinion: Self diagnosing just makes you a pick-me

As someone who fought through their childhood and adolescence with undiagnosed and untreated mental disorders, nothing pisses me off more than some bitch who does this big dramatic sigh and says something like “oh, I’m so ADHD; I get so hyper sometimes”, “omg I’ve got such bad anxiety, my hand is shaking”, “I cried so much yesterday, I’m so depressed.” Let me tell you, these little spells in no way entitle you to make the leap to diagnosing yourself with anything, and right now, I’m seriously considering the pros and cons of very roughly introducing your face to a chair.

Now, let me make this clear; there’s a very certain type of person that I’m talking about here, and I think everyone knows who they are. The people that I am definitely not talking about are the ones who show genuine signs of something that they aren’t currently diagnosed with, but don’t have the tools to go and get their diagnosis for whatever reason. The people that think that they have OCD because they just need to have their felt tip pens in perfect rainbow order? I’m talking about you, and I highly encourage you to feel as targeted as you possibly can. Please try and learn that trying to get attention by claiming you have disorders that you don’t have doesn’t make you seem cool at all. In fact, you’re just lame.

The awful thing about self-diagnosing in this day and age is that it is seriously encouraged by the massive amount of information that’s accessible on the internet, and people can forget that what they see online might not always be the most reliable source. Anyone can post or write anything that others can access, whether or not the information holds any kind of truth or not. Honestly, I wouldn’t be that surprised if some of the people who do this whole annoying self diagnosing thing truly believe that they have what they claim to have just because they take everything that they see online seriously. If that’s the case, maybe it’s not necessarily their fault. Maybe. I don’t know how much I mean that.

With everything that’s going on around the whole internet right now, especially in the modern era that keeps developing new forms of content and communication, it’s more important than ever that there is actual awareness of the conditions that people are commonly self diagnosing themselves with. Mental and neurodivergent disorders are right at the top of that list, and I think that this is because there’s not one strict criteria on what someone would need to present with in order to be properly diagnosed. Things like that fall on a spectrum, and people can be treated and medicated in a various number of ways once they are diagnosed. Disorders can present in a multitude of ways, and all of this self diagnosing shit isn’t helping the people who really need help. All of this talk on the internet about having such severe anxiety because you got nervous one time…is truly just bullshit and uncalled for. And don’t even get me started on self diagnoses’ sister, peer diagnosis. You’re not in my head, so for the love of all that’s holy, don’t tell me what’s going on inside it. Maybe I have certain tendencies of a disorder, but that doesn’t mean I have the disorder. God forbid I have traits.

Please, for the love of GOD, just get it off my feed so I don’t have to look at that shit. Go touch some grass people.
