The Greens have unveiled a new policy, proposing the creation of a government-owned-and-run supermarket that they’re calling KiwiMart. The Greens have proposed KiwiMart as an alternative to the Foodstuffs/Woolworths supermarket duopoly also positioning it as competition that’d incentivize chains like Woolies and New World to lower prices.
The policy has drawn criticism, with some claiming that the Greens want excessive government meddling in the economy, and the ACT party taking to social media to post A.I. generated imagery evocative of Soviet Breadlines.
Of course, as any woke student reading this knows, communism is when the government does stuff – and the more stuff the government does, the more communist it is.
In New York, mayor Zohran Mamdani also campaigned on introducing government and it’s been clear through this election season that Zohran’s messaging has stirred up a little bit of chutzpah in The Greens.
Asked just how much cheaper groceries would be in KiwiMart, Green Party co-leader Chlöe Swarbrick has said that “I am not saying what the price of an egg should be,” stating that The Greens will trust ‘the experts’, referring to The Reserve Bank and the Commerce Commission.
This has drawn critique from those on the Left, too, with Alliance Party president Tom Roud stating on Twitter that “[…]Not knowing economics is how you get snookered by the gremlins in treasury, Lange learnt that the hard way,” referring to the 32nd Prime Minister who oversaw the implementation of the sweeping neoliberal reforms known today as Rogernomics.
