Released on June 5th, Malcolm Todd’s newest album Do That Again is good but not great. While his last album included a host of unique yet nostalgic, genre-blurring tracks, this one feels like the same mellow tune done 13 ways.
Featuring singles “Breathe” and “I Saw Your Face”, the release follows a pattern of yearning lyrics, syrupy guitar riffs, and melodies that sound equally happy and sad. It’s truthfully hard to tell where one track ends and another begins, and I found myself searching for a point of difference amongst the chorus of monotony.
In spite of most of the album being much of the same, songs “Breathe” and “Malcolm in the Middle” offer a temporary break from the soundtrack of sameness. They become the lifeblood of the release, bringing a fresh, poppy burst of sound that is worth listening to. I love Malcolm Todd, but this one is a miss for me.
