It’s Time to Invoke the 25th Amendment Against Donald Trump

The presidency of the United States demands judgment, restraint, and a fundamental respect for human life. It also demands a safeguard for those qualities fail. The 25th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, ratified in 1967, provides a mechanism to remove a president who is unable to carry out the duties of the office. Under Section 4, the vice president and most of the cabinet can declare the president unfit, temporarily transferring power to the vice president. It is a measure designed for moments of crisis – when the stability of leadership itself is in question. Today, that day has arrived

Trump has reportedly used social media to threaten catastrophic destruction against Iran, language that goes far beyond conventional diplomacy. The deliberate targeting of civilian populations is explicitly prohibited under the Geneva Conventions, and even invoking that possibility signals a troubling disregard for established norms of warfare.

This rhetoric has been reinforced in speeches where Trump has threatened to bomb Iran extensively and target critical civilian infrastructure. These are not offhand remarks; they reflect a worldview in which overwhelming destruction is treated as a legitimate bargaining tool. Experts warn that such proposals, if carried out, could constitute war crimes.

Equally alarming is the inconsistency in Trump’s messaging. He has alternated between declaring the conflict nearly over and threatening further escalation without a coherent strategy. This unpredictability has contributed to global instability, affecting financial markets, oil prices, and diplomatic relations. Allies are left uncertain, adversaries emboldened, and the world more volatile.

Perhaps most concerning is Trump’s reliance on extreme threats as a negotiating tactic. Reports describe ultimatums warning of catastrophic destruction if demands are not met. While this approach may be intended to intimidate, it also risks dangerous miscalculation. In a world where military escalation can spiral rapidly, reckless language is not just irresponsible – it is potentially catastrophic.

This is precisely why the 25th Amendment exists. When a leader repeatedly demonstrates erratic behaviour, disregards legal constraints, and flirts with catastrophic consequences, the threshold for invoking this constitutional safeguard must be considered.
