Weekly topic: online literature.
THEY’RE STUDYING FANFICTION THIS WEEK. Granted it’s that shitty Harry Styles After one. I’d be interested in doing a census and see if people like this homework more or less than reading through a twenty page scholarly article. There are some people who have Wattpad open in this class but, unlike usual, they’re actually engaging with the lecture.
I really like the way the teacher communicates the reasons why he’s structured the classwork and explains how the work feeds into the learning outcomes. It seems a bit benign but as someone who’s literally never been in this class before, I feel that I have a good grasp of today’s objective.
It is a shockingly small overall class size compared to how engaged I already am by this lecturer and topic. Small class size is potentially a good thing here because the lecturer is very interactive with the students. Very informal environment, even beyond what I’m used to with an arts paper, but it’s brilliant in a two hour lecture to keep students engaged.
TERRIFYING statistics about how many self-help books recently published were written by AI. I always thought the bad advice was just because the authors are usually upper-middle class white people who have faced very few social hardships.
4th gen electronic lit makes use of generative Ai.
One of the main discussions this week is surrounding “Radically unfixed text” created by AI compared to the traditional ‘fixed’ nature of written work.
The lecturer does a very good job at properly outlining the cost/benefit balance without just slapping a pros and cons list up on the slides.
This really annoying person in the class keeps getting overexcited and just brought up the library of Alexandria (it was me, I brought up the library of Alexandria. I’m having so much fun here).
Class interaction is a very good thing and structured in a way that doesn’t interrupt the flow of learning. I have ADHD and I struggle even in my hour long lectures but the class environment made it, so it wasn’t too overwhelming.
