Time for my bi-annual re-watch of Cartoon Network’s Over The Garden Wall. (Those who are politically correct also watch it in September as the creators intended.)
It’s a heartwarming story about two brothers getting lost in The Unknown and slowly losing hope as they draw deeper into the woods, as winter creeps closer, as The Beast draws nearer. If I had to choose one piece of media to comfort me at the end of the world, it would be this one. The art style is emblematic of that from a classic storybook and captures the same nostalgia as Hayao Miyazaki, of big emotions written into the fabric of the world around us, set to a soundtrack of folk blues and soft jazz. Every single rewatch I find something new to love. A new piece of symbolism, allegory, detail brought back from episodes before. The whole runtime is designed like an inside joke between creators and audience
