Confessions of a Theatre Kid: Where are the Theatre Kids at Waikato?
HELLOOO??!! WHY IS THERE NO THEATRE CLUB AT THIS UNIVERSITY? I feel like I’m shouting into the void. Only answered by the strong but mighty voices of my beloved Theatre Studies class. It’s one of the greatest blind spots for student engagement here at Waikato. While other unis produce musicals and debut students original work, we flounder and pretend we don’t exist. Where is the community for our performers? I know you’re all out there; I just need to find you.
I know there are keen performers here, I know it because I’ve met some of you, which leads me to believe there’s even more of you hiding in the business and STEM classes I don’t dare to step foot in. So where are you? Where is our space?
This is my Batsignal for you nerds, it’s in the shape of a Hamilton logo star and I’m shining it high above the performing arts center. Let’s get together, lets figure something out. Maybe we start with something cheap and cheerful, something original even. And if people were interested, I would love to try my hand at directing some Shakespeare. Truly, the only thing in our way is that there’s no currently established drama or theatre club. It’s a tragedy, in my humble and definitely not overly dramatic opinion.
Yes, this column is acting as free advertising and a way to gauge interest. But I’m serious, if you’re a playwright, a performer, a director, a comedian, an improvisor, a musician ANYTHING! Let me know, you can see my email in the byline, ([email protected]) tell me what you want to do and let’s make shit happen. If you’ve never even performed before but have always wanted to try it, you are welcome here. Are you with me? Great, now let’s join the ranks of our established clubs and get rehearsing.
