If you ever thought our local music scene was lame, it’s because your uncultured ass hasn’t checked out @thegloveboxofficial on Instagram. Run by Logan Lewis, a musician who used to skate with me back in high school, the platform is a scuba dive into the underground of NZ music’s new wave, the kind of shit you’re not even cool enough to know is being made.
Tell us a bit about your platform & the work you do with musicians?
Theglovebox is a place to display the talent hidden within NZ I like too say. I shoot music videos, interviews, I do photo shoots, work with clubs. Anything to help people get a name out there and essentially, it’s a platform to showcase the artists creativity while also getting to know them a bit more personally.
What’s the process like for filming music videos?
Well everyone has different approaches and certain process for the way they direct /shoot. A lot of mine have been run and gun same day, meaning I show up, and we just drive around looking for interesting locations that fit the song, shoot a couple different things there and move on. I’m trying to change that now, and dive deeper into my planning. I’ve always written in my little journal beforehand about what aesthetic I feel when listening to a piece of music, from colours, to shot angles, Is there a story being told here that I can play off. These days I really want shoot more cinematography for my mv, add way more feel to the video. Come up with mood boards, find locations first, have all the shots planned out. So everything’s ready when we shoot
How to you chose which artists to work with?
I kinda reach out to anybody that’s willing to give me a chance, tall poppy tends to get in between that in some instances, which you know, happens I guess. Which is something I’m hoping theglovebox and help get rid of, but yeah I’ll just reach out to anyone making music round the country, or if I’m lucky they’ll reach out to me. But if I’m honest, I find it hard if I’m not really feeling the music, what I’m saying is if ideas don’t start to flow right away then it is difficult with whom I shoot with, but at the end of the day theglovebox is for everybody.
What is New Zealand’s current musical wave to you?
I feel as if New Zealand’s music wave is still forming, but since starting my journey with this platform and seeing how much talent is out there, this waves about to crash on all shores and the world finna know about this little island on the map.
You do some really rad work with music photography, how to you capture the energy & mood?
Appreciate that! Thank y’all. To be honest, I’ve always found it hard to explain, I’m not really savvy with my technical talk, I just kinda see it in my mind you know? And mess around until i capture the image. Obviously if there’s an image that is wanting to be portrayed that makes things easier. I’ve been a viewer for a long time, so I’d say I’ve figured out what captures people’s attention. The atmosphere speaks for itself.
Which camera(s) & equipment are your go to?
Like I said I’m not up to date with the technical talk haha. It also depends on what I’m trying to capture so I don’t necessarily have a go too. But right now, the go to would be a Sony A7iii cause i don’t have one yet!
Fave camera lens?
That would be my fisheye
How does the vibe change depending on which genre you are capturing?
The genre speaks the most for what vibe you are feeling, the music does the talking. But one of my favourite things to do is to try come up with a way to shoot a certain genre a completely different way, that still holds the feeling of the music. It’s such a beautiful way to show perspective.
Video n photo editing software of choice?
At the moment I use Premiere Pro, and (don’t tell anyone) but I’ll jump on CapCut every now n then to add things because it’s a lot easier and faster. I would love to learn to use Da Vinci Resolve and After Effects, if I could master those. That would be the go to.
Fave NZ venue?
I gotta give it to big fan bro, I haven’t ventured out to much yet, but I love shooting there and will hopefully perform there myself one day! It’s such a sick vibe, it almost gives off a homely feeling, they have a wall out the back full of promotion posters of all the artists that have played there, all the walls in the artists bathroom has everyone’s signature and a message. Whole ting is sick.
Do you think the average student is aware of how much new NZ music is getting made?
Simple answer sadly is a no. But it’s also exciting. But yeah I think it can depend on where you live, you have to be in the know to know kinda thing, but once the door opens then you’ll be surprised how much is going on.
Why did you start theglovebox?
I got this question the other day and didn’t have an answer haha. I created theglovebox a couple years ago now, I think the idea I had then was being an independent artist myself it’s so hard to get a name out there, especially in New Zealand, I wanted to create a hub like place for everyone to go to see all the creatives/creativity happening around the country, and that’s still the idea, it’s not just about music, it’s about anybody creating. I hope to one day have a crazy catalogue of creative minds on the platform, and for it to form into the hub I’m after.
What separates the Waikato music scene from NZ in general?
The Waikato music scene is very raw, when you listen to the music it’s very much somebody just trying something new, and learning the process, there’s not a lot of overseas inspiration in the music, in saying that there is quite a bit of it forming in the Waikato, it was there from the start but is growing. I think growing it certain areas in the Waikato makes the music a lot more relatable.
Did growing up at the skatepark effect your creative path at all?
I think growing up at the skatepark plays a massive roll in my creativity, the skatepark for me was a home, it’s where I felt like fully at peace, it’s where I was introduced to filming properly, shoutout Jonty Bullick, watching him muck and make lil videos out of our days is what inspired to get my first camera and it all just went from there.
Best NZ skatepark?
Dayum…I mean the og Cambridge skatepark will always be number one for me, but putting that aside, I’d say Tokoroa skatey is fye.
What genres & scenes do you think are affecting NZ’s sound the most atm?
That’s a hard one cause my involvement in the scene is with artists on the come up, so it’s a lot of underground, but there’s so many genres mixed in within, I think the underground is gonna pop up and take over real soon. Indie artists and bands are doing really well, and yeah, I don’t have certain genre.
How much do you think Soundcloud encouraged our generation to make music?
Bruh, I think Soundcloud had a massive, MASSIVE, impact on our generation. Soundcloud is a sole place just to experiment. I see it as a blank canvas, for anyone to start painting. People like juice wurld, trippie redd, lil peep, X, uzi, posty, and many more!
Using Soundcloud they not only pumped up the distribution company but they pathed away for plenty of artists to explore there sound and believe they can make it.
How are Soundcloud & Spotify different as an artist? Which pays better & which is easier to get plays from?
Like I said Soundcloud is a blank canvas, at least for me, I think I see Spotify as more putting your finished perfected painting on display. I haven’t received hardly any coin from my music, but it’s all from Spotify, if I’m honest I’m too sure how well Soundcloud pays, but its highly depended on what distribution company you use.
Your personal fave musicians of all time?
That is a hard question bro, the list could go on for ages, I’ll try narrow it down haha. All genres, old and new. No order.
-Frank ocean
-Jaden
-Mac miller
-Pink Floyd
-The beetles
-Queen
-Bob Marley
-The eagles
-Xxxtentacion
-ASAP rocky, and the clan
-Kanye west
-Skepta
-Corbin
-Fleetwood Mac
Bro there’s so many more haha.
Instrumental music or digital production?
I’m not very good at either hahah but they both are obviously so important, have both and pros n cons. If I was able to play it be instrumental, nothing sounds better then a real instrument.
When’s the ep out & where can we find it?
Ahhh, we don’t have a date at the moment, we’re hoping too in the next couple of months. It’ll be on all streaming platforms as per usual.
How does the fashion/modelling world interact with music?
I think anything in the art/creativity world are all family, they all influence each other, and 9 times outta 10 all involve one another in what ever the work is. I think when it comes to fashion and modelling it’s such a statement. Clothing especially is such a big part of the music world. When you think runway I think music plays a big part of the vibe for the catwalk, there’s always artists there and yeah all round it plays a big part in inspiration
If you had to bet everything on which kiwi musicians are most likely to come up, who are you choosing?
I gotta put myself on there, manifesting n that. I’d say erybody in my circle for sure.
Kovan, Fatpapi, Le’jab, Virtue3400, Buzzy, Benibachi, adxxis, C.saint. Kid Rey is on route, bro there’s so many people I just know will make something of themselves.
Love THEGLOVEBOX.
