Te Matatini 2025 Wrap Up
Written by Aitangi-A-Kawiti Wynyard

Te Matatini 2025, rocking in with a record breaking 55 rōpu this year, was more than just a competition, it was a celebration of our Māori culture, unity, and national pride.
Filled with plenty of highlights ranging from Naia’s viral solo from Te Kuru Marutea, to the backwards ‘E’ from Te Ahi ā Tahurangi, there’s plenty to enjoy whether you are a fan of Kapa Haka or not. Te Kapa Haka o Ngāti Whakaue from Te Arawa claimed the top spot at Te Matatini 2025.
Their performance was a heartfelt tribute to the late Sir Robert Gillies, a highly respected elder, and it resonated deeply with everyone watching.
With a unifying theme of love and respect, all the way from their whakaeke to their whakawātea, their haka and waiata beautifully honored their tīpuna and embraced aroha.
The rōpu’s performance was powerful and emotional, showing just how deeply they value their culture and community.
I’m still mad that Waka Huia didn’t win, but that shi was pretty damn good. Mean week whānau.
