The ‘B’ in B Semester stands for “Business Time.” Maybe not literally, but figuratively, with the Annual General Meeting (AGM) and WSU Elections coming up, it is. This is your chance as a student to make a difference in student affairs and or run for a Director’s position within the Waikato Student Union.
The AGM is a time where the annual report, annual plan, and the budget are contemplated and acted upon. Students have from the 3rd to 14th August to make submissions and raise ideas with WSU members about the annual plan and the budget. This is called the “consolation process” and it is the only time where you can have an influence on the AGM because the budget gets written on the 23rd. After that time, all you can do is sit and listen on 23rd September.
The WSU Elections are an annual event where every position on the WSU goes up for grabs. Nominations open 7th and close on 18th August. To be nominated as a Director, Vice- President, Maori Vice-President, or President, you must be a currently enrolled student and have three or more nominations other than yourself.
WSU President Ben Delaney is excited about the nominations process. “I think students who want to consider running for the Board of Directors should between now and nominations come and talk to the incumbents. We advise you to ask what the roles are because the perception and reality of being on a board are quite different.”
So, if you want to have a say in the way the campus moves, then come up to the WSU office with your nomination or ideas on the budget – or both!
