Waikato University’s Golden Key chapter hosted a seminar on the economic crisis last Wednesday with guest speaker and ex Minister of Commerce/ Speaker of the House Margaret Wilson. However, the seminar contained more financial/political banter then any real solution to the problem or how it affects students.
The seminar took place in S.G.01 with approximately 30 students in attendance. Wilson gave background to the financial crisis morphing into an economic crisis, suggestions about whether or not to regulate the market, and the question: has the media made the recession worse?
In an answer to a student’s question about whether or not there was an end in sight of the current economic situation, Wilson replied, “I guess things will change, whether they will get better or not for some will depend on your position in society…however, the reality is it will probably be longer than most people think. You’re not going to get a sudden return to normal.”
Golden Key President Daniel Garnett was pleased with how the seminar went and encourages more students to come listen. “The idea of these seminars is for some intellectual stimulus both for Golden Key members and the wider student body. Part of our chapter standards is to put on some events that are based around idea that challenge people academically. Our next one is next week where we’ll be talking about climate change.”
The next seminar is on Climate Change and is open to all students at 1pm Wednesday 5th August S.G.01.
